ACEO - Art Cards, Editions & OriginalsACEO stands for "Art Cards, Editions and Originals". These cards have one main rule - they are 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches - the size of a trading card.
The reason for this is, that Art Cards are made to be traded! But while artists were happily trading cards, the general public was left out in the cold, having no Art Cards to trade. A group of artists realised this, and quickly made their cards available for sale at remarkably low prices so that everyone could join in the fun!
Cards are sold either as originals or editions. Make sure you know which you are buying! If it is a print it should say so, and it should be numbered and signed, usually on the back. Collecting Art Cards can be extremely addictive as Artists from all over the world are now creating, and selling these little gems in different mediums and of different subjects. Every interest and subject is covered making this form of art especially affordable and very collectable, it seems you can't stop at just one.
However, I find that the secret of this form of miniature art is the intense sense of intimacy I experience when I hold it in my hand. When a piece of art is so small that it can rest in the palm of my hand, I am being gently invited to bring it a little closer to my eyes.
Looking at it I bow my head to bring my hand closer to my face, I am letting that piece of art enter into a vulnerable personal area, an area which I would never hold anything dangerous this close to my face. This is the way I would hold a butterfly or small kitten, very gently and close.
This is why miniature art is a gift, a treasure, a secret and special friend.
